Enemy at the Gates (2001) is a war film directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud, set during the Battle of Stalingrad in World War II. The movie is inspired by true events and the book by William Craig.

The story follows Vassili Zaitsev (played by Jude Law), a Soviet sniper whose remarkable marksmanship gains him notoriety and turns him into a symbol of hope for the Russian people. His exploits are publicized by Soviet propaganda officer Danilov (Joseph Fiennes), who writes about Vassili’s heroic feats to boost Soviet morale.

As Vassili’s fame grows, the Germans send their top sniper, Major Erwin König (Ed Harris), to Stalingrad to kill him and break the Soviet spirit. The film delves into the tense cat-and-mouse game between Vassili and König, with each sniper trying to outwit and kill the other in the ruins of the city.

Amidst the warfare, a love triangle develops between Vassili, Danilov, and Tania (Rachel Weisz), a soldier and partisan. This personal conflict adds to the drama as Vassili and Danilov’s friendship becomes strained due to their feelings for Tania.

The film portrays the brutal conditions of the Battle of Stalingrad, highlighting the psychological and physical toll on both soldiers and civilians. “Enemy at the Gates” is a gripping depiction of a historical battle, showcasing the determination and resilience of individuals amidst the horrors of war.
